Mining people on the move: IronClad, International Goldfields, Australasian, Scotgold, Lodestar, OGL Resources, VDM Group, Forge Group, Bass Metals, Exco Resources, Western Areas
25 January 2012
IRONCLAD Mining has appointed Ian McRae operations manager, Chris Mroczek chief geologist, Denis O’Callaghan mine superintendent, and Daryl Gray logistics manager at the company’s Wilcherry Hill iron ore project on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula.
McRae (pictured above) is a former operations general manager at Robe River Iron Associates in Western Australia who has more than 35 years’ experience in the Australian resources sector.
GEOLOGIST Travis Schwertfeger is the new CEO at Tony Sage-chaired International Goldfields, having been key to development of exploration teams to oversee work at the company’s programs in three countries over the past year.
The former Newmont Mining and Golden Predator Corp geologist had worked for more than 15 years in Australia, North and South America, and West Africa. IGS continues to build its exploration portfolio in Brazil, Ivory Coast and Mali.
Schwertfeger graduated from Colorado School of Mines in 1998 with a BSc in geological engineering, and received his MSc in ore deposit geology and evaluation from The University of Western Australia in 2011.
ANOTHER ASX-listed iron ore hopeful, Australasian Resources, has appointed Zhenya (Dio) Wang as managing director and Clive Mensink as a non-executive director. Mensink is a former board member and deputy chairman of Australasian, while Wang has worked with the company since 2006. He was made CEO in July, 2010.
SCOTTISH-focused gold explorer Scotgold Resources’ non-executive chairman since 2009, John Bentley, is now the company’s executive chairman.
AUSTRALIAN civil and resources engineering firm VDM Group has elevated CEO Andrew Broad to its board of directors, as managing director. Broad joined VDM in August 2010 as chief operating officer of its construction and contracting divisions from ASX-listed drilling company Ausdrill.
GEOLOGIST and former exploration manager at Perilya, Paul Cranney, is now working as a consultant to Lodestar Minerals. With Cranney’s many years spent exploring in Western Australia’s Bryah Basin, involvement with the Fortnum gold mine in the region, and work with Sandfire Resources at its standout Doolgunna project, he is expected to make a “fundamental contribution to Lodestar’s exploration programs as the company ramps up activity at its flagship Peak Hill‐Doolgunna project during 2012”.
COAL industry veteran Allan Fidock has joined OGL Resources as managing director.
He previously held executive and senior management positions in more than 30 years in opencut and underground coal mining with a range of owner-operator and contractor companies. Most recently he was part of Macarthur Coal’s executive leadership group. His role would be pivotal as OGL finalised the acquisition of two “high value coal assets, and then moves to bring these into development”, the company said.
FORMER CEO of UGL Resources, David Simpson, has taken over as CEO and managing director of Forge Group, succeeding Peter Hutchinson.
As well as his time at UGL Resources, a division of ASX-listed UGL Limited with an order book worth about $A1 billion at the time he left, Simpson has extensive experience in the engineering and construction sectors in Australia and internationally. He spent 13 years working for companies such as Leighton Contractors, Daimler Chrysler Rail and Asea Brown Boveri (ABB).
BASS Metals has welcomed experienced mining engineer Barry Sullivan as a non-executive director.
Sullivan worked for Anglo American in South Africa from 1969 to 1974, and in Australia with Mount Isa Mines (MIM) from 1974 to 1995. He was executive general manager with MIM for six years with responsibility for regional exploration, four underground mines and one opencut mine and power, water and support infrastructure.
Currently chairman of Exco Resources and a non-executive director of Lion Selection Group, Sullivan was a non-executive director at gold miner Catalpa Resources until its merger with Conquest Mining to form Evolution Mining in October 2011.
MEANWHILE, Exco Resources has announced Geoff Laing’s commencement as managing director. He has served as acting CEO since the resignation of previous managing director Michael Anderson last August.
Laing is a chemical engineer with more than 20 years of experience in the mining industry and an MBA from the University of Western Australia.
NICKEL miner Western Areas’ experienced operations director Dan Lougher will take over from Julian Hanna as the company’s managing director at the start of February.
Lougher has been with Western Areas for the past six years and has more than 30 years’ experience in the mining industry. He holds a master of science in engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand and a bachelor of science (honours) in mining geology from the University of Leicester.
