Starting a new mining project is generally investment intensive (could cost billions of dollars), the lead time to bring a prospective ore deposit into production can be lengthy, and its potential for creating value is highly dependent on several unknown and uncontrollable factors such as the world economy and future prices of commodities. The risk of achieving a poor outcome is real but on the other hand, the reward can be outstanding provided that the strategy is right.
